Our Inspiration:

In 2008 a group of friends were discussing that the City of Coachella lacked public art and programs for youth and community. In the 1979-1980 there was a mural (but never finished) that was started by a local group of artists. As the years passed the wall began to crumble due to the alkaline in earth. A newly constructed wall replaced it. It is approximately, 1000 feet in length and 6 feet high. We began to be organized and discuss the idea of a mural. A mural that would depict the history and struggles of the Chicano/Mexican people. And so it was. The mural was approved for funding by the City of Coachella. Ruben Gonzalez and John Duran worked and developed a time- line of events that were important to the history. Each 23 murals are approximately 6 feet high and 50 feet long. Local artists volunteered. The Shady Lane mural began in 2009 and finished in 2021. This is what inspired us. The very first public art project in Coachella, grassroot community efforts.

Coachella Event takes place in the Beautiful month of April.
